How 'bout them DAWGS

6th Grade Yearbook Sale--November 14-18--Students will bring home an order form and envelope when the sale begins for 6th graders.

P1 and P3--Students read Poe's story, "The Black Cat."  They then wrote at least one paragraph taking an ordinary object and turned it into something scary as Poe did to a simple black cat.  HW--Finish the writing in class if not done.  Work on the mythology contract--due Thursday.

P2, P4, and P5--Life Doesn't Frighten Me--We looked at the painting by Munch, "The Scream" and brainstormed what might make people scream.  We then read the poem by Maya Angelou, "Life Doesn't Frighten Me."  Students identified the rhyme scheme used by Angelou and then wrote their own version of the poem following the same rhyme scheme.  HW--Finish the poem if not finished in class; students had over 30 minutes to work on this.  If they didn't finish, they were not using time very wisely.  On-line essay is due Wednesday.

October 28

P1 and P3--Students continued working on their mythology contracts.  Today was the last day in class for them to work on it.  The rest needs to be completed at home and turned in on Thursday.  HW--Work on mythology contract.

P2, P4, and P5--We reviewed adjectives quickly before students worked on identifying adjectives in sentences.  Those who had not turned in their papers worked on finishing them today.  HW--On-line essay scorer due Wednesday.  Adjective worksheet from today (front and back) due Monday if not completed in class.

For those who did not like their grades on the sentence parts quiz, we will have a study session before school on Thursday before they retake it that morning.  Here are some practice sheets they may want to complete. 

Reminders:  Direct objects and indirect objects follow action verbs.

Indirect objects come before direct objects in sentences.

All sentences with direct objects do NOT have to have an indirect object.

Predicate adjectives and predicate nominatives follow linking verbs.

Predicate adjectives describe the subject.

Predicate nominatives rename the subject.

October 27

P1 and P3--Students continued  to work on the mythology contract.  Some students may have things to work on at home, but they are not required to do so, yet.  Students are able to take their contracts home and can work on parts of it as homework.  All items will be due November 3.

P2, P4, and P5--Half of the class typed the paragraph where students put the comic in order; this paragraph focused on sequencing.  The other half of the class drew a monster and wrote as many words as possible to describe the monster they drew.  HW--There is a new prompt on the on-line essay scorer.  Some students were able to get started on it as they finished typing their paragraphs.  This will be due November 2, Wednesday. 

October 26

P1 and P3--Students continued  to work on the mythology contract.  Some students may have things to work on at home, but they are not required to do so, yet.

P2, P4, and P5--We had a mini-lesson on adjectives and read the book, The Big Ugly Monster and the Little Stone Rabbit.  Then, the class was split into two.  Half of the class typed the paragraph where students put the comic in order; this paragraph focused on sequencing.  The other half of the class drew a monster and wrote as many words as possible to describe the monster they drew.  Tomorrow, the groups will flip.  Those who typed will work on the adjective monster activity.  Those who worked on the adjective monster activity will type their paragraphs.  HW--There is a new prompt on the on-line essay scorer.  Some students were able to get started on it as they finished typing their paragraphs.  This will be due November 2, Wednesday.  (Some students were not told about this because they were not typing today.  They will be told tomorrow, but they can go ahead and get started on it if they wish.)

October 25

P1 and P3--Students continued working on the various tasks found on the mythology contract.  If they need to, they may begin taking it home.  No homework!

P2, P4, and P5--Students took the quiz over sentence parts.  They were able to write on the quiz and put their answers into iRespond.  No homework!

October 21

P2, P4, and P5--Students took a 6-frame cartoon which was out of order and wrote an 8-sentence sequencing paragraph re-telling the event.  They will have time next week to type their paragraphs.  Students were given another study guide to complete for the quiz on Tuesday.  Here are the answers for those who want to check their work.  Download Answers for worksheet 123 and 124 study guide  I can't post the study guide itself because there is not an electronic version.  HW--Study for quiz on Tuesday.

 

October 20

P1 and P3--Students continued working on the mythology contract.  HW--Flashcards due Tuesday.

P2, P4, and P5--DGP-Finished the week.  We checked two study guides--for the quiz Tuesday and the one on nonfiction writing.  I modeled how to write an 8 sentence paragraph using a comic.  Students will do their own tomorrow.  HW--Study for the quiz on Tuesday.  Download DO IO PN PA practice  This is a practice sheet in case you want to try it.

If students in P2, P4, and P5 have questions about subjects, predicates, direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nouns, or predicate adjectives, they may come in early on Friday to get help.  This won't be a large study session because Game Club will be taking place in my room at the same time, but I will be here early and can help kids one-on-one.

 

October 19

Friday is College Day for Relay for Life!

P1 and P3--Students continued working on their mythology contracts.  As they finish assignments, they should turn them in; grades will be added to Pinnacle as we go along.  HW--Flash cards of mythology terms due Tuesday.

P2, P4, and P5--Using iRespond, students took a quick check to see how they were doing with identifying PA's, PN's, DO's, and IO's.  This did not count as a grade.  Students were given 2 study guides today.  One is for the quiz on Tuesday over PA/PN/DO/IO, and the other is for the unit on expository writing.  Students used the text book to finish notes on the writing study guide.  As they finished, they could work on the study guide for PA/PN/DO/IO.  HW--Finish the PA/PN/DO/IO study guide if not finished in class.  Quiz will be on Tuesday! Just in case...Download DO IO PN PA study guide

October 18

Friday--College Spirit Day Fundraiser for Relay for Life--Students can wear a college hat or sweatshirt for a $1.00 donation to Relay for Life.

P2, P4, and P5--Vocab Test on Lesson 44; We checked homework from yesterday, and students turned in vocab squares which were due last Friday but kept to use as a study guide.  We then reviewed direct and indirect objects before students completed a chart which combined direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nominatives, and predicate adjectives.  HW--Finish chart if not finished in class.  Download Chart practice
