May 23

6th--Students shared the myths they wrote on Friday and then began working on a "Facebook" page for a character found in mythology.

7th--Students shared the ads they created for The Lorax. They then created a poster about the theme of Oh, The Places You'll Go.

May 20

6th--Students took a test over mythology and then began writing a myth to explain a natural phenomenon such as an eclipse, flood, etc.

7th--We read The Lorax and created an advertisement persuading someone to buy a Thneed.

May 19

6th--Students worked on their mythology contracts.  As they finished, they studied for their test tomorrow by creating a PowerPoint on mythology.  HW--Study for the test.

7th--The plan to learn how to make a presentation using prezi.com had to change when the site wouldn't work this morning.  Instead, we read a play version of "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court."

May 18

6th--Students continued to work on the mythology contracts.  They were also given their writing portfolios to bring home.  HW--Study for the mythology test which will be Friday.

7th--Students completed a response to literature writing activity using song lyrics that they brought to school.  Download Song Lyrics response to literature

May 17

6th--Students used their note cards to take a quiz on mythology.  They then had time to work on their contracts.  HW--Study for the mythology test on Friday.

7th--Students finished giving their speeches for "The Scarlet Ibis."  They then got a book of photographs from Life magazine.  In pairs, they picked one photograph and wrote a paragraph analyzing the photograph.  HW--Students should print off the song lyrics which represent some part of themselves.  Due tomorrow.

May 16

May 13

Reminders--

Media center books were due today!

No bus notes will be signed the remainder of the year.

6th--We watched a couple of video clips about mythology while students continued working on their contracts.  HW--Note cards are due Tuesday!

7th--Students began writing their opening or closing arguments for Brother's trial.  They had to decide his guilt or innocence in his involvement in Doodle's death.  HW--Make sure to have the arguments finished.  Song lyrics due Wednesday.

May 12

7th--Students completed a survey regarding bullying at Dickerson.  We then read "The Scarlet Ibis." Download The Scarlet Ibis full text Students examined the use of symbolism in the story.  Download The Scarlet Ibis Graphic Organizer 2Their final assignment for this story is to decide the guilt or innocence of one of the main characters, Brother.  After deciding his guilt or innocence, they are to take on the role of the prosecuting or defense attorney and write an opening or closing argument for Brother's trial.  They will have class time tomorrow to work on their arguments and will begin presenting them on Monday.

May 11

7th--We started a mini-unit on "The Scarlet Ibis" which is a short story.  We looked at important vocabulary from the story and discussed symbolism in general prior to reading the story.  If time permitted, we started reading the story.  HW--Finish the chart of symbols.  Attached here if needed.  Download The Scarlet Ibis Graphic Organizer 1

Hope everyone had a very happy Mother's Day.

Thanks to the PTSA for the wonderful treats for Teacher Appreciation Week.

Reminder--No bus notes allowed the last 8 days of school.  This means that students are not allowed to ride the bus home with friends.

6th--Students continued working on their mythology contract. 

7th--Students watched the Twilight Zone episode of The Monsters are Due on Maple Street.  We discussed how the monsters in the screen play were both actual and metaphorical.  They then brainstormed a list of the "monsters" inside of them and in society.  HW--Study Monster vocabulary for a quiz tomorrow! Download The Monsters on Maple Street Vocabulary Anticipation Guide  Answers are on the second page of the document.
