Just a reminder that December 5 is a full school day. There was a misprint in the handbook noting this day as an early release day.
We will have a test over government on Monday, December 10. Students will be provided with more details during the week prior to the test.
All 8th grade social studies classes will be giving a mid-term on December 20. It will cover content from the beginning of the school year through government. Students have been asked to put it in their agenda.
Download government_study_guide.docRelay for Life will be sponsoring College Hat Day this Friday- Nov. 30, 2007. If students want to wear a hat all day, the cost will be $1.00. Money will be turned into homeroom teachers. So far, Dickerson has raised over $1,600.00 towards the $10,000.00 goal for Relay for Life.
Students will be presenting their anti-bullying PowerPoints created last week. After we complete these, we will begin the next lesson in Wordly Wise and will begin a unit on mythology.
Homework--
Nightly--Read 30 minutes.
Tuesday--Make sure you get a current event for class on Wednesday. Students should write a 5 sentence summary of their article prior to class.
Wednesday--Make sure you have your reading log signed and in class on Thursday. A total of 210 minutes should be included.
We are diving into the structure of Georgia's government and will learn about the structure and function of the 3 branches.
Monday--Students will practice comprehension and finding information in our text. Students will have the entire class period to work on this. What isn't finished should be finished for homework.
--Executive Branch--read pages 530-534 and answer 4 questions on 534
--Legislative Branch--read pages 536-542 and answer 4 questions on 542
--Judicial Branch--read pages 544-546 and answer 3 questions on page 546
Tuesday-Thursday--Students will utilize Inspiration (a computer program) to create a concept map of each branch. They will be given a list of ideas and concepts from the standards to include. Friday--How a Bill Becomes a Law--I'm Just a Bill from School House Rocks and The Green Tree Frog (an example of how a bill becomes a law in Georgia)
Just a reminder to finish your foldable book on the GA Constitution of 1777, weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, US Constitution, Bill of Rights, Abraham Baldwin, and William Few. You may be able to use it for a little quiz on Monday if we have one.
Starting on the 6th, the reading classes will work on a bullying WebQuest. After using the links below to research bullying, they will create a PowerPoint demonstrating their learning. Work on the WebQuest will continue in class next week. Here is the sheet for students to complete using the links below.

Monday--We will read about Washington, DC to support the students as they begin studying government in social studies class. They will have a crossword puzzle to complete.
Tuesday--Students will finish the crossword puzzle on Washington, DC. They will then begin using the Wordly Wise Lesson 2 words in sentences. If students do not complete their sentences, they will need to complete them for homework. Students should find a current event article to bring to class on Wednesday.
Wednesday--Share vocabulary sentences; Current Event Articles; Homework--study for vocabulary test. There will be words from the first lesson in Wordly Wise included on the test. Get reading logs ready to turn in on Thursday.
Thursday--Reading Logs Due; Silent Reading

We will begin our government unit which will continue after Thanksgiving Break. Our study begins by examining strengths and weaknesses in the Georgia Constitution in 1777. We will then look at the Articles of Conferation and the US Constitution to review our federal government. After Thanksgiving, we will study Georgia's govenment including the three branches, the juvenile court system, and the commonalities the state government shares with the federal government.
Homework:

Tuesday and Wednesday--Students will be given directions for writing a Teenager's Bill of Rights. This will be due in class on Thursday.
