November 30, 2007

Fri., 11/30

Today in homeroom our students received the gift wishes from our Powers Ferry students. We have done much for these underprivileged kids over the years. A new rule disallows sending in cash, checks, or gift cards....that means the actual shopping must be done by our families. Please look over the list with your student to see how you can help. If a big ticket item is on the list, see if several of the homeroom students want to share the expense. Thanks in advance for what you plan to do.

In class today, we shared some very innovative ways to "tame a dragon" or "capture a unicorn". then we discussed the different elements in persuasive and expository writing. This weekend, students are to use the worksheet they received in class to create 10 sample sentence patterns. They can use or adapt any of the sentences from the piece presented in class.

Thurs., 11/29

Today in class we  tested the "domino effect" with DGP #6. Then we discussed "The Trouble with Television" ( which I strongly thing your parents should read!) and analyzed the persuasive structure of it and the article from SI on "play". Tonight you are to write a 10-12 sentence paragraph to explain either"How to tame a dragon" or "How to capture a unicorn". Can't wait to hear your advice.

I hope you had a good conversation with your parents about all your progress reports yesterday. Today in class, we will complete the persuasive reading activity. The analysis of professional writing hopefully  will enhance your own writing skills. We will continue our work with the DGP also, so very carefully complete week #6 for homework tonight.

Tues., 11/20

Well Y'all, I just spent 20 minutes trying to post a dancing, gobbling turkey on my blog to wish you a very "Happy Thanksgiving". Not the best use of my time since I have so much to do. Anyway, have a wonderful holiday. I hope our discussions of "bullying" have helped you in several ways. We can make a better world! See you on Monday!

November 19, 2007

Mon., 11/19

I hope you remembered to do your two+ holiday chores for your family this weekend. That was in place of an English assignment, so I hope you were very helpful. Today we examined the Pyramid of Hate, listened to the story of "The Greenies", and  defined some terms with a partner. Help out tonight, and tomorrow we will share definitions and write in response to some very famous quotes.

Fri.,11/16

Today in class you finished your revision and created a final draft of your persuasive essay for a test grade. If you were not in class today, you may come in @8:15 on Monday to complete your assignment. For homework this weekend, plan to help your parents with at least 2 holiday chores instead of time spent on LA work! We will be doing the county assigned unit on Bullying on Monday & Tuesday. If you are not going to be here in school, you were told to pick up the unit assignment from me before you left today. Have a great weekend!
