Fri., 9/28

After a quick trip to the Media Center to check out new books, we had a quiz over the 10 Ways. After that, we discussed the procedures and plans for our narrative paper. We shared a homework check for the pre-writing ideas. This weekend determine your final details to begin writing your story after you take the SAT #2 vocab quiz on Monday. Have a great weekend!

Today we completed the SAT/Sent. Str. activity. Please come in tomorrow @ 8:20 if you were not here to participate today. Also, we reviewed your 4 choices for the personal narrative. Pick up the worksheet and brainstorm/bullet 3 different choices from our list.

What fun we had today with the COGAT testing! In our short class, the groups from yesterday shared their very inventive "new" SAT definitions. Be sure to share some of them with your parents. You are a clever bunch! Then you created 7 formula sentences for simple & compound structures using the SAT words. Remember your 10 Ways quiz is Friday, and your SAT #1&2 quiz is Monday.

Mon., 9/24

After an enjoyable weekend, we are back to work in LA. Today we checked the DGP#2 and prepared for your HW tonight of DGP#3 all five days. Then we practiced the sentence formulas for both simple and compound sentences. If you were absent today, please write sample sentences using the formulas (found on your sentence structure worksheet). Bring them in @ 8:20AM tomorrow for a makeup lesson. Also, bring your SAT#2 cards to class.

After we checked the SAT #2 vocab, we discussed several quotations, THE WAVE, and "On the Bridge". Tonight you are to brainstorm using the handout from class to come up with 7 topic/details on a personal narrative. We'll work with the sheet in class tomorrow, so come in early to catch up if you need to.

After watching our very clever SAT #2 vocabulary video today, students were able to work on vocab cards which are due on Thurs. Special directions were given in class; remember to make your cards in ink.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend with our beautiful weather. Today in class, we discussed Maya Angelou's writing and shared from your work last week. For tonight, remember to plan for Picture Day tomorrow, bring fresh notecards for SAT words, and look for the comic strip I asked for in class today. If you have not completed the DGP #2 for Wed, Thurs, Friday, please do so tonight.

Today in class, you worked with 2 classmates to discover & record 5 examples each (in quotes)of the 5 senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. If you missed class, you need to create your own activity sheet and complete at home. Be sure to list the page # by each sample.With all that accomplished, relax and enjoy your weekend.

Thurs., 9/13

Today in class, you read an excerpt from Maya Angelou's memoir. Your assignment was to pre-read on pgs. 30-1 and then read "Mrs. Flowers" on pages 32-38. After that you responded in "syntactically mature" sentences to each part of #4,5,6 on pg. 38. Tomorrow in class, we will contruct some imagery charts. Remember, if you are out observing the holidays, you have until Monday to complete the work you received on your assignment slip. Also as a reminder, remember that Tues., 9/18, is Fall picture day. You need to have your envelope with you if you want to purchase pictures. Also, the Walton Parent Night meeting for 8th grade parents will be Mon., the 17th.  See you soon!

After I explained the plan for the rest of the week and presented the options for those students who would be missing school, we had the first SAT quiz. Your grades were excellent--if you studied at all. After the quiz, you read the short story "Charles" by Shirley Jackson. For tonight, you are to write a sample sentence for each of the 10 Ways to Begin a Narrative using the plot from "Charles". Be prepared to share several of your terrific sentence examples in class.
