End of the year

The school year is wrapping up! Students took all their clothes home on Monday May 19th. They should have all their belonging from their PE locker at home now. They are turning in their locks on Tuesday the 20th. If they can't find their lock, they'll need to pay $5.36 for it. Locks are school property like textbooks. Students won't get textbooks or report cards until all debts have been paid.

The last day of school, all students will be signing yearbooks in the gym during their connections time.

Thanks for a great year and have a fun, safe, and healthy summer!

Teacher Fear Factor 2008 was a blast! Thanks to all the teachers who participated: in the events, in the dunk tank, collecting money, running concessions, crowd control, organizing, etc! Teachers participated in some yucky and challenging events. Some braved the cold dunk tank, and even Ms. Bush braved the cold water for a good cause! All the money raised went to Relay for Life--we raised over $600!!!! Mrs. McLaughlin was the champion this year (on the right in the photo)--Congrats! Thansk to "DJ's in action" as well, for coming out and volunteering their time to provide us some tunes and sound equipment--and braving the rain (their number: 678-223-5742)!

This has become an annual event and is open to the Dickerson community. So look for it next year and bring the whole fam!

Locks of Love 2008

Locks of Love 2008 was a great success. Check out the pictures in the hallway near the front office. On April 18th, nine students and one teacher got their hair cut off for the non-profit organization of Locks of Love (www.locksoflove.org)! They also raised money per amount of hair they got cut off and the money went to Relay for Life. Overall we donated over $200 and 115 inches of hair!!! Way to go Dickerson students and teacher! Thanks to all the other students who’ve participated in donating hair to Locks of Love on their own as well. You can do this at any point in time on your own, just ask your salon/stylist about it.

We’d like to thank Joseph’s Salon (@ 625 Johnson Ferry Rd—770-973-2471) and Challise and Company Salon (@ 3593 Canton Rd C-9 --770-591-5264) for sending us stylists to cut the students hair at school and giving them a coupon to come in and have it styled for free! This has become an annual event so look for info Spring 2009!

Field Day 2008 pictures!

Field Day 2008 was a blast! Congratulations to the following pods for winning with the most points for their grade for the day: 6-pod D, 7-pod A, 8-pod A. They received 'goodie bags' from the Avenues. And congrats to the most-spirited homerooms too: 6--A. Lawrence, 7--Rejent, 8--Kaht. The students received "throwback" Hawks jersies from Nike, and the teachers of those homerooms got special prizes.  Thanks to all the homeroom teachers who really got the kids pumped up this year (I think they liked the prize for most spirited homeroom). Thanks to all the sponsors who donated prizes and food this year: Longhorns, Brusters, Chick-fil-A, The East Cobb Avenue, Moe's, Georgia Movie Theater Company, Niketown, Publix, and Sam and Dave's BBQ1!!!!!! The mascots showed up again for 6th grade! Thanks to the parent volunteers who served water and popsicles to all the students. A special thanks to the Conn/music/health teachers--we couldn't have done it without you (literally!!!)  Field_day_08_033Field_day_08_012_3Field_day_08_104Field_day_08_055Field_day_08_057

The activities were Team Handball, Utlimate Frisbee, Volleyball, and Tug-o-war--which the 6th grade teachers beat the mascots at! Mrs. Saunders challenged the school to buy 800 Field Day t-shirts! They did! So she had to wear a mohawk to Field Day. Mr. Scherholz said he would shave his head if the school bought 1,000 shirts! Keep that in mind for next year! Click on the picture to see a larger version of it! As you can see, we all had a great time. Thanks to everyone for a great 2008 Field Day!!!! Hoops For Heart & Jump Rope For Heart from the American Heart Association

Every year we hold the Hoops for Heart and Jump Rope for Heart events at Dickerson to help raise money for the American Heart Association. The money raised helps fund lifesaving heart and stroke research and educational programs. This year, our events will be held on February 13th at 8:00am in the gym. We have had huge success with our events every year and are aiming to make it even better with your involvement. Students will receive a donation envelope in school and they will also be available in the front office.  Feel free to pick one up during conference week or any other visit to Dickerson.  There is also an option to create a web page through the American Heart Association and collect donations via the Internet. You can visit www.americanheart.org/jump or www.americanheart.org/hoops for more information.  Students can return it to the Physical Education Staff on or before February 13th. Thank you in advance for helping us and the American Heart Association.  Feel free to contact the Physical Education Dept with any questions.
