Homework:  NONE  :)

It would be helpful, if you have internet, to find examples and descriptions of the different rock types that need to be displayed in your poster.  Those without internet or experiencing difficulty will be able to use classroom computers and laptops to complete their portion of the group poster.

Help-session tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 25th @ 8:15 am.  Bring your questions, text, assignments, etc.  You may also use the computers to work on your group poster.

4.3  Sedimentary Rock

Warm-up:

  • Fill-in Vocabulary and Section Summary WS, add to CW section of SCI binder and TOC
  • Continue creating your STUDY GUIDE booklet for Ch. 4.  Use the vocab and section summaries to create your book and add examples on the back of each page

Classwork:

  • Continue working on group poster of Rock Cycle.  Complete the background and title today.  Using your textbook, field guides, and online resources each student will add one example and description of each of the following rock types:  Intrusive and extrusive igneous rock, sedimentary (clastic, chemical, and organic), and metamorphic (foliated and nonfoliated).  Each poster will also include the processes of forming rock types and a description of each.  Use arrows to show the continual rock cycle.

Homework:  Section Review - Igneous rock (WS35-36)

Each table/lab group needs a 1-2 L soda bottle for Friday's lab activity "Let's Get Sedimental" (see text, page 112-113).

Help-sessions on Thursdays @ 8:15am

Chapter 4 test, Friday, Oct. 3rd

Rock Classification

Students will classify rocks by their process of formation

3.2  Igneous Rock

Essential Question(s) for Lesson:

  • Describe (3) three ways that igneous rock forms.
  • Explain how the cooling rate of magma affects the texture of igneous rock.
  • Distinguish between igneous rocks that cool within Earth's crust and igneous rock that cools at Earth's surface.

Essential Vocabulary:  rocks, metamorphic, sedimentary, igneous

Text Vocabulary:  intrusive igneous rock, extrusive igneous rock

Warm-up:

  • Create a flip book which summarizes each section in Chapter 4.  Makes a great study guide.
  • Self-check CW assignments from Friday.

Classwork:

  • Start group project:  Rock Cycle Poster
  • Students will create a poster of the rock cycle using research from their text, online resources, and other reference materials.  Poster should be completed by Friday, September 26th.  Each poster should include the processes found above and below earth's surface that create different rock types and examples of each rock type as the rock is classified (Intrusive and extrusive igneous rock, sedimentary, and metamorphic).  Include a description of each.  Use arrows to show how rock is created and destroyed in the rock cycle.

Homework:  NONE  :)

Help-sessions on Thursdays @ 8:15 am

Ch. 4 Test, next Friday, October 3rd.

3.2  Igneous Rock

Warm-up:

  • In your Science Journal, write this question and a response for discussion: Do you think rocks that cooled and solidified from lava on Earth's surface would look different from those that cooked and solidified from magma inside the Earth?  Why?
  • Complete "Rock Cycle Diagram".  Add text boxes for types of rocks and processes.  Add arrows to show how rock changes types.
  • Add Vocabulary Skills WS to CW section of SCI binder and TOC

Classwork:

  • Section Review for "The Rock Cycle", add to CW section and TOC

Homework:  NONE  :)

Complete CW assignments if necessary

4.1 Rock Cycle

Warm-up:

  • Complete and discuss "Rock Composition Lab", keep activity in Lab Folder

Classwork:

  • Discuss mid-term gradesheet and how to know my grade (See Graded Papers section of SCI binder, keep a log of grades especially if you do not have internet and cannot view iParent).  Each type of task belongs to a group that is "Weighted".  By averaging the assignments of one task type and multiplying that average by the task type weight, then, multiplying by 100, a student can find the points earned for one task type.  Add the points earned for all task types and "WaLaa" you have found the grade for science.  Continue to add grades to log.  Not all task types have an assignment to average yet, therefore, there are only 70 points to earn at this time.  The chapter 3 test will be added tomorrow, Friday, September 19, 2008.  At that time, all task types will have been entered and the total possible points earned for a grading period should be 100.  You can do your own calculations or you can just view iParent online!
  • Please sign and return the science gradesheet to your science, teacher me!!!
  • Draw a diagram of the Rock Cycle in your SCI JOURNAL.  Include all rock types and processes from your textbook.  Create labels which define rock types and processes.  Add arrows to show how the Rock Cycle works.  More time will be given to this assignment in class tomorrow.

Homework:  Get your gradesheets signed!!
