New Unit!! Inside the Earth
No eggs today, we have to postpone the lab activity "Characteristics of the Earth". Volunteers need to bring in a hard-boiled egg with its shell!
This week our topic will be the Structure of the Earth.
Essential Question(s) for the Unit:
- How do the forces within the earth affect the formations of the Earth's surface?
- How do temperature, pressure, and composition vary as you descend into each layer of the Earth?
- How does the density difference of each layer play an important roll withing the earth?
- How do convection currents in the mantle cause changes to the earth's surface?
GPS Essential Question(s) for Unit:
- How are the earth's layers alike and different?
- What challenges stand in the way of sending explorers to the center of the earth?
Picasso vocabulary: crust, mantle, outer core, inner core, lithosphere, asthenosphere
Warm-up:
- Create a cover for your CW folder. It should represent the Unit we have just completed "Weathering and Erosion". It should be neat, colorful, and creative. The folder should include a proper heading.
- Take your CW assignments and the CW Table of Contents for the "Weathering and Erosion" Unit and place them in the folder you created. I will collect them and share them with your parents during Conference Week.
Classwork:
- Add new TOC to your CW section. Add the first assignment, "Parent Letter" for Ch. 7. This makes a perfect study guide for this unit. We will read sections 1-4 in the coming weeks. The next test will be on Wed. December 10th.
- Discovery notes: Classification of the Earth. There are 2 systems used for naming Earth's layers. One is based on the chemical composition and the other according to physical structure. Students draw 2 diagrams in their SCI Journal representing these to systems and label.
Homework: NONE :)
