The Final Countdown!

The last two days have been "crazy" busy!  On Wednesday, students completed presenting their career projects from the "NoBoundaries" website:  www.noboundaries-stemcareers.com  Great job by many.  I especially enjoyed the games created!  The powerpoints were very informative.  There are a lot of jobs out there!

Thursday, we began the "Bubble Lab" activity.  Many could not finish but it was a great review on how to write a lab report.  Students had a great time making bubbles!

Today, we will explore "Black Holes" and "The Big Bang Theory" with hands-on activity, watch the video "Magnetic Storm: Earth's invisible shield" by NOVA (VID 550 MAG), or play space games (students choose).  Any time left will be used for signing yearbooks.

During 3rd and 4th Period, the media center will broadcast the video "ICE AGE" and students will continue to sign yearbooks.

It has been a WONDERFUL YEAR!  It went by so fast, you are going to be the best 7th graders, EVER!  Have a Great Summer, enjoy the time off with family and friends, and keep safe!  Visit me in the FALL to show me how much you have grown!

Signing Off from a fantastic year, Ms. Moore (Your 2008-2009 Earth Science Teacher)

Astronomy Unit:

Ancient cultures imagined the sun as a god.  The Greeks called their sun god Helios and depicted him driving a flaming chariot across the sky.  For the Egyptians, Ra was a sun god and the creator and controller of the universe.  The Japanese considered their emperor to be a descendant of their sun goddess, Amaterasu.

In1868, a French astronomer named Pierre Janssen and an English astronomer named Norman Lockyer independently detected in the chromosphere of the sun a new element that was unknown of Earth.  The new element, called helium (named after helios, the Greek word for "sun"), was not discovered on Earth until 1895.

The increasing and decreasing number of sunspots in an 11-year cycle appears to be driven by the magnetic field in the sun's surface layers.  The field seems to "wind up" much as a rubber band does (perhaps because of the difference in the rate of rotation between the sun's poles and its equator).  This process intensifies the magnetic field; therefore, more sunspots appear, and the sun becomes much more active.

Essential Question(s) for Lesson:

  • Describe the basic structure and composition of the sun.
  • Explain how the sun generates energy.
  • Describe the surface activity of the sun, and identify how this activity affects Earth.

Text Vocabulary:  nuclear fusion, sunspot

Warm-up:

  • Read 19.2 "The Sun: Our Very Own Star", pages 618-623.  Complete the Section Review on page 623 and add to CW section of SCI Binder.

Classwork:

  • Continue working on Careers Project using the website:  www.noboundaries-STEMcareers.com
  • Groups should begin working on their presentation using their research from last week.  Each presentation should include each angle research for group's career of choice.  Groups may create a website, powerpoint, movie, song, brochure, poster, etc. to share what was found in their research.  Rubric for project may be found on website.
  • Students should turn in their website review sheets with rubric today.

Homework:  Complete CW assignments if necessary
