Ms. Larkin's Reading Classes- (Periods 1,2,& 7)
I am so happy you are in my class!
The basics of this class are reading, reading, and more reading. I intend to teach you the tools and strategies to help you become a more successful reader. I want you to enjoy reading as much as I do. Reading is a gift that opens up all sorts of possiblities, not just for this year, but for your lifetime.
Standing (everyday) homework is to read 30 minutes each evening. That said, I want you to be able to do 'kid' stuff and sometimes life gets in the way. Try to budget your time and save your reading for weekends and/or days that you don't have a lot of other activities. Your goal is 210 minutes per week. Don't forget to record your reading on your reading log and have mom/dad sign the reading log Thuursday evening. I'll check it and give tickets each Friday. Download Reading Log
Every Thursday (starting in September) you will have a current event due. We are working on current events in class so that by September, you will have a good idea of what is expected. Download Current Event- sample1 You may use this form Download Current Event-how to set up or simply write the 5w's and information on your notebook paper.
Students are expected to read at least one book per month and take an AR test on that book by the end of the month. You will also have some type of project due at the end of each month that relates to the book. The project for August will be to complete a Just the Facts sheet and an oral book talk. Download Just the Facts In the future, this is the form you will use in the event you do not pass your AR test.
Upcoming events to tell your parents:
Open House for 6th grade parents is Tuesday August 17th at 6:00.
Open House for 7th grade parents is Thursday August 19th at 6:00
The meetings will start with a PTSA meeting and then your parents will follow your schedule and go to each of your classes for 10 minutes (to meet your teachers). You need to make sure your parents have a copy of your schedule- you will fill one out in first period on Monday.
