ALP:  The

Pearl

Pre-reading Warm up Journal:  1.  What would you expect of a story in which there are “only good and bad things and black and white things and good and evil things and no in-between anywhere?”

2. Suspending your disbelief and ignoring current lottery laws, pretend you won a million dollars (paid in one installment).  How would you spend this money?

We read part of  Chapter 1. Finish the chapter tonight and answer the following questions for homework:  A.  The mood of a novel can change from chapter to chapter, and even from paragraph to paragraph.  Describe the shifts of mood in chapter one.  Use textual support.

B.  Describe the setting in which The Pearl takes place.  Use clear & strong adjectives.

C.  Write a paragraph describing the town’s doctor.  Utilize at least 5 juicy adjectives and 5 strong verbs.

D.  Comment on the dynamics displayed between indigenous (Kino) and European conqueror (the        doctor).  Go beyond the superficial, make connections with your historical/world knowledge.

E.  Pen your “Song of the Family.” Write a poem or paragraph describing the sounds you hear when you first wake up in the morning.  Type it, trim the excess & hand it in separately.

8LA:  Lesson 9 Power Point presentation.  We finished "Tape Measure Murder" and discussed.  DGP.  Lesson 9 Vocabulary exercises A & C due Wednesday.
