8LA:  We took the Mystery Unit Test today, reviewed vocab 9 and checked DGP 15. 

ALP:  We reviewed Lesson 9 vocabulary exercises.  Took quiz on chapters 2 & 3 of The Pearl and read Chapter 4 in class.  Tonight's homework--read chapter 5. 

Chapter 4 questions--Describe the social injustice that Kino experiences.  (consider and explain role of the Church, the monopoly of  the pearl buyers and the role of the villagers.)

What is Kino’s plan for the pearl and what is Juan Tomas’ advice?

What does Juana want to do with the pearl?  Why?

Chapter 5:

Why does Kino say the pearl is his soul?  What do you think he should do with the pearl?  What would you say to him to try to convince him? 

At the end of the novel, you'll be writing an essay tracing Kino's transformation.  Start highlighting sections in the book you can utilize to support your analysis.

ALP:  We read all of chapter 2 in class today and part of chapter 3.  (The Pearl)  Finish reading chapter 3 and be prepared for a quiz tomorrow.  No questions.  As usual, exercises A, B & C from vocabulary lesson 9 are due tomorrow/Wednesday. 

8LA:  We reviewed for the mystery unit test.  Continue working on the mystery novel project.  Though it's due March 31, you can turn it in early!  We are starting a research project soon so don't get bogged down with work at the last minute.  As usual, exercises A and C from vocabulary lesson 9 are due tomorrow/Wednesday.  For another look at the mystery unit author information, download this power point Download mystery_authors.ppt  For the test you'll need to know information on the authors, be able to match significant items/clues with the appropriate story, know all the mystery vocabulary words and be able to match quotations and characters from the stories whence they came.  Be ready!

Pearl

Pre-reading Warm up Journal:  1.  What would you expect of a story in which there are “only good and bad things and black and white things and good and evil things and no in-between anywhere?” 

2. Suspending your disbelief and ignoring current lottery laws, pretend you won a million dollars (paid in one installment).  How would you spend this money? 

 

We read part of  Chapter 1. Finish the chapter tonight and answer the following questions for homework:  A.  The mood of a novel can change from chapter to chapter, and even from paragraph to paragraph.  Describe the shifts of mood in chapter one.  Use textual support.

B.  Describe the setting in which The Pearl takes place.  Use clear & strong adjectives.

C.  Write a paragraph describing the town’s doctor.  Utilize at least 5 juicy adjectives and 5 strong verbs. 

 

D.  Comment on the dynamics displayed between indigenous (Kino) and European conqueror (the        doctor).  Go beyond the superficial, make connections with your historical/world knowledge. 

E.  Pen your “Song of the Family.” Write a poem or paragraph describing the sounds you hear when you first wake up in the morning.  Type it, trim the excess & hand it in separately.
