Oh joy, oh mirth, oh felicity!

Greetings convivial souls!  What are you doing checking the blog on vacation?  You should be relaxing and enjoying your hiatus.  But, since you are a diligent one, take note of the following:

ALP classes:  Acquire the following books

  • Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury  (You'll need this in early January!)
  • The Pearl by John Steinbeck (February)
  • Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank (March)

Thanks for the fantastic holiday wishes, cards and gifts.  It's been a real delight getting to know you all over the past couple of weeks.

ALP: We edited the compare/contrast essays today. Tomorrow we'll meet in the media center computer lab to complete the ROAD TRIP assignment! 

8LA:  We read Roald Dahl's short story "The Landlord" but didn't have time to discuss.  DGP #11 is due tomorrow. Check your binder for the sentence.

December 17 & 18

ALP:  We ventured to the Media Center to check out a pleasure reading book. Please remember to bring this to class tomorrow for silent sustained reading post Vocabulary Test.  We also read two compare/contrast essays:  "Are Animals Smart" and "Small Town vs. Big City" from the WAG book.  HWK:  Write a compare/contrast essay.  Rough draft due Wednesday.  We'll peer edit on Wed.

8LA: Rough draft of compare/contrast essay was due today.  We peer edited this essay. Final draft due Wednesday. 

ALL CLASSES:  CUMULATIVE VOCABULARY TEST FOR SAT UNITS 1-6 IS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18

Last chance for extra credit opportunity is Thursday!  Vocab Quiz on unit 7 will be given at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday morning.  Peace!

This morning in HR we took the Mock Writing Test.  If you were absent, you need to come in early (8:30) over the next three days to make up test.

Monday, December 10

Prepare for the Mock Writing Test.  We went through the state Power Point, looked at the rubric and read several student essays and rater commentary.  ALP: Homework--read the Albatross article and complete the corresponding assignment.  (Due Wednesday!)

POETIC DEVICES

Alliteration:   The repetition of initial consonant sounds

Assonance:  The repetition of vowel sounds within a line

Allusion:  reference to another time, work, person, etc…

Apostrophe:  addressing an absent person or abstract entity

Hyperbole:  exaggeration for dramatic effect

Imagery: words or phrases that appeal to any sense or combination of senses

Metaphor:  A comparison between two objects with the intent of giving clearer meaning to one of them.                Often forms of the “to be” verb are used, such as “is” or “was” to make the comparison

Onomatopoeia: The use of words that imitate the sound

Oxymoron: a seeming contradiction in two words put together:

Paradox:  a statement that initially appears to be contradictory

Personification:  A figure of speech giving animals, ideas or inanimate objects human traits

Repetition:  The repeating of words, phrases, lines or stanzas

Rhyme:  The similarity of ending sounds existing between two words

Simile:  A comparison between two objects using a specific word or comparison such as “like”, “as” or            “than”.

ALP:  Nursery Rhyme Rants due     I.  Warm up Journal--Describe autumn to someone who has never seen the seasonal changes of Georgia.  II.  Read "Why Leaves Change Color in the Fall" on page 443 of Literature textbook and answer questions 1-6.  Discuss components of expository essays.  HWK: VOCAB 6 FLASHCARDS DUE WEDNESDAY

8LA:  Return timed persuasive essay and place in writing portfolio 

I.  Discuss Expository essay components 

II.  Warm up Journal-- Option 1:  If every child in the world had access to a computer, what potential could be unlocked?  What problems could be solved?  Option 2:  Write a letter to a teenager who is new to email explaining proper netiquette and introducing him/her to the unique language, merits and capabilities of electronic mail vs. snail mail. 

III.  Read Email from Bill Gates (Lit book page 54) and discuss.  Answer questions 1-6 at end of reading
