October 24 to 28

Book Fair Reminder!  If you would like to purchase something from the book fair, you may do so at the beginning of class if you have your money with you.  You have all week to do this, and your parents may go by during conference week to make your purchase for you.

Reading: This week, we will read a play called Flight Into Danger, by Alex Hailey.  As we read, the students will look for words with the prefixes and suffixes we are studying.  I have included a link to these words below.  Students will read the play aloud and answer comprehension questions about the play when we finish, probably Thursday.  As always, continue to read for 20 minutes each night.

Today we took notes and discussed the  best, or "top-ten" prefixes to know.  We discussed all the 10 prefixes, meanings and examples.  Please study,  as these prefixes will help you decode difficult words this year and all the years to come!Download 10 common prefixes to know

October 17-21

It was great to see everyone during our normal schedule today!  Don't forget, next week is conference week and students will be dismissed at about 2:15 every day.

Today we learned three ways to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word.  Two methods, using a dictionary or using context clues are familiar to most.  Another way to determine a word’s meaning is to disassemble the word and examine the root word, the suffix and the prefix.  Today, students watched a video about this skill and completed a worksheet practicing finding the prefix and suffix in words.  We will work on this skill this week.  Please check the blog tomorrow for the list of prefixes and suffixes to know for this unit. 

HW:  The “T-Read or Treading”  work is due at the end of the week.  Many have already done this.

October 12

Here are the tone words you should know for the test.  By "know" I mean you should understand what the word means.  We went over this in class today, but you may want to review again tonight.  You will not be tested on the meanings; you will have to read a passage has and apply one of the tone words to the passage. Look at yesterday's blog, too, for more things to study.

October 10 to 14

Letters regarding conference times were sent home today, Monday, 10/10/11.  Please ask your student  for it, look it over, and sign and return as soon as possible.  Thank-You!

Reading:  Today we were in the Media Center for a lesson on how to use the Destiny catalogue to find a non-fiction book.  The students were given an assignment called "T-Read-or-Treading" which I will help them with at school.  Basically, thery areto use Destiny to find a non-fiction book that covers a topic from their fiction book.  Some were successful in this; others not, but we will go over the assigment  in class on Tuesday to be sure everyone understands this assignment.  The students are responsible for reading the non-fiction book; we will devote Friday to this.

We will finish our unit on Tone in literature this week also.  Students will use a graphic organizer to help them find the tone of a piece of writing. I will give the students some notes and work to put in their notebooks on Tuesday.   We will have a quiz on finding tone on Thursday. 

HW:  Keep reading for 20 to 30 minutes every night.

October 3 to 7

Beginning on Wednesday of this week, the 6th grade students will have Connections and PE during the first part of the day.  All teachers will have the schedule on the board for the students on Wed., so this is just a reminder that we will have that schedule for until the end of next week.

Reading:  We are working on determining the tone of a piece of literature this week.  We will work on this finding tone in our reading this week by examining the word choice that the author uses in the piece. 

Homework:  We will have a test on Tuesday, Oct. 4,  which will similar to our last test.  The students will read a short story and tell the conflict, protagonist, antagonist, expositions, inciting incident, climax, resolution, theme and point of view of the story.  One way to study for this is to  review the terms to be sure you know the meaning of each one.
