Week of Feb. 28 to March 4

        Welcome back to school!  It was wonderful to see everyone today.

Reading:  We will use the poem "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes to discuss poetic terms this week.  Today everyone was given a copy of the poem to add to their notes along with ten vocabulary words.  We listened to a dramatic reading of the poem, also.  We discuss the events in the poem, the use of poetic devices in the poem and end the week with a dramatic reading.

HW.  AC students will write a monologue based on one of the characters in the poem.  This will be presented on Friday.  Also, remember the poem you will recite from memory will be presented starting Monday, March 14; please work on the memorization.  Gen. Ed.-will present a dramatic reading of one of the stanzas with 2 or 3 other students on Friday.  We will work on this in class this week,

LA:  We will work on indirect and direct objects this week.  We will review using a Power Point and learn how to diagram sentences with indirect and direct objects.  Along with diagramming and work sheets, students will write a cartoon and a short story incorporating indirect and direct objects.  While students work independently on this skill, I will meet with each student to review his or her persuasive essay.  We will go to the lab on Thursday and Friday to type the short story and correct the persuasive essays.

HW:  Finish your work sheets for Monday and Tuesday.  Review your notes on indirect and direct objects for a quiz on Thursday.

Week of Feb. 14 to Feb. 18

Progress Reports will be distributed on Wed., Feb. 16th.  Parents, please look at it, sign it, and return it to school with your student.  Thanks!

 
Reading: This week we will continue with our study of figurative language, especially as it applies to poetry reading.  HW:  Continue to read for 20 minutes each night.

AC students will receive a poetry memorization assignment tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 15.  The students will receive a packet of poems and will choose the one they would like to memorize and recite.  Please click here for all of the details:  Download Poetry Memory Unit

 

LA:  We will write our persuasive essay this week and type it in the computer lab.  This will be a five paragraph essay with an three-prong thesis statement.  Click here to see the grading rubric for this assignment:Download Persuasive Essay Scoring GuideName.  All work should be completed in school and turned in to me by Friday, Feb. 18.

Week of Feb. 7 to 11

Reading:  We began to study poetry today.  Students have a list of 17 poetry terms to learn; please study these definitions a little bit each night.  We will have a quiz on the terms next Monday.   Also, keep reading books for AR points.  I will put the AR grade on Pinnacle next Tuesday so that they can be included on the progress report that goes home on Feb. 16.

HW:  Study poetry terms and read for 20 minutes each night.

LA:  We reviewed pronouns today as well as other skills we have studied this year; we will review this tomorrow and also review for the test.  We will start our persuasive writing unit this week; this goes along with the persuasive terms we studied in January.  I will add any homework for this unit as we go along.

HW:  Study for pronoun test, which will be on Thursday, Feb. 10.
