week 11/26/07

Welcome back. It appears that all the teachers had the same idea, let's give homework!

The students are to write a narrative or a journal from the prospective of a 12 year old living in communist eastastern europe in 1985, as they approach the fall of communism and the rise of democracy in the region( through the year 1995). Things for them to consider : What was their life like under communism? What was their school like?, were did they play? What couldn't they do? When communism fell what changed? was life difficult and why? They should start at age 12 and end at age 22.

This is to be at least 1 and 1/2 pages long (handwritten) or 3/4 typed. We have spent a lot of time talking about communism, so their should be some understanding of the issues. Their textbook will be a great resource. Pages begin on 342- 366. We started in class today so they have an understanding of what I want.

I made a deal with the students that if they are well behaved they wouldn't have homework until after the Thanksgiving holiday, so far so good.

We have begun a discussion regarding the ending of communism . Monday we'll be doing a comparison with Communism Vs. Democracy. We'll briefly discuss the reunification of Europe and start exploring modern day Europe.

Test grades were posted today.

Please add these five questions to your study-guide and have it completed by Monday.

1. Who was the U.S. president at the time of the attack at Pearl Harbor?

2. Why did they use the term "Puppet government" to describe the government of eastern Europe?

3. What happened to Mussolini during WWII and what did Italy then do as a result?

4. Where did D-day occur and what was the result?

5. During the Cold War what happened to the city of Berlin?

That's it for the questions.

Today in class we did a photo analysis I think they enjoyed this activity. We also read in our textbook and had begun a graphic over the Cold War.

Monday we will go over the study guide and complete our graph.

Have a great weekend!
