week 8/27/07

Week three is upon us and we are starting to move rather quickly.

We had an assignment due today, the students were to fill in the Renaissance line, in a chart that we will be completing with our social studies unit. We have finished section 1 on the renaissance and will begin exploration tomorrow.

We also began working on coordinates and mapping and I believe that some students were quite frustrated, but I told them they'll be much better by the years end.

I told the students they will be having a quiz over sections 1 and 2 in their text on 9/7, their quz over sections 3 and 4 will be most likely be on Tuesday.

Not everyone has been completeing their assignments pklease check their grades. I have written confidential notes on those students who havn't been following through.

The week is almost over, I handed the books out yesterday and are requiring a book cover(large size) by tomorrow.

The summer reading cards are due as well. Most of your children have already turned them in hooray!

We are going to be learning some basic geography skills before we move deep into the Renaissance.

There will be no homework for the weekend.

Week of 8/20/07

Dear parents,

it has been a bit hectic around here, but we are starting to settle in. Remember tomorrow is open house and you'll get a chance to meet your children's teachers and ask those questions your children won't, like do you have homework? I look forward to meeting you all. Open house is for the parents , not the students, so if you can please have someone stay at home with your child. If that is a problem we will ask them to wait out in the hall.

S.S. There collage was due today and the majority had there, but some didn't.

Tonight's assignment may seem a bit odd , but I promise there is a method to my madness. I want to see how the students make connections to things in relation to what we are going to study this year.

Friday we smelled six samples cinnamon, oregano, cocoa, coffee and vanilla , tonight I want them to briefly research how they were first discoverd. How did they know to eat them or did they have another purpose? What conditions are needed to grow them? I do not want pages of information, just enough to get a good conversation and connection going. They may also cut and paste onto a word document

Week 1, welcome

Good day to you all, I'm Mrs. Finley and I will be teaching sixth grade Social Studies .

I am look forward to a great year, full of exploration and fun. We are using a brand new textbook  so we will navigate together.

My first assignment for you will be to get a mead five star single subject notebook ( if you haven't already) and make a collage, I will explain this in class, this should represent who you are as a person, so that I may get to know  you.  This is also a way of identifying notebooks that have been left behind.I would like the collage done by  the following Monday 8/20, but please try to have the notebook by Wednesday of this week.

Parents I will be giving a syllabus and my classroom expectations letter  later in the week.
