Carlton - 3rd period - Today students continued writing their expository rough drafts, and we reviewed the directions for the writing project. The due date for the project has been changed to Monday, 12/19.  The directions are on my earlier post for this week.  Here is a recap of the directions:

1. Choose TWO topics from the list - one expository and one persuasive.  For each topic, do the following:
2. Complete the SPAFT procedure for the prompt
3. Complete a full prewrite for the topic.  Brianstorm what you will say and use one of the formats in the project directions to organize your information.  See my example on the blog.
4. Write the introductory paragraph of your essay.  Put the introduction into paragraph form just as you would if you were going to write the entire paper. DO NOT WRITE A FULL ESSAY!
5. The project is due Monday, 12/19 to allow students more time to do a quality job.

Johnson/Carlton: Writing and grammar test tomorrow.  There is a study guide on Ms. Johnson's blog and I gave students a copy of the study guide today.

Carlton: On Friday, 12/9, we reviewed the directions for the writing test review project.  I have updated the directions and example.  They are both downloaded below.  The project is due Friday, 12/16.  Students continue to work on writing skills.  They are completing their persuasive letters and will be writing an expository rough draft this week.  Students will select one of their rough drafts to revise and edit. This paper will be graded for a test grade and the other will be a quiz grade. Everyone is working very hard on their writing as January 18, our state writing test date, approaches!

Attard/Carlton:  We continue to work on writing as we prepare for the writing test on January 18.

Johnson/Carlton: On Friday, we explored the persuasive techniques of political cartoons.  The students will create their own political cartoons for a project grade.  The project is due Wednesday, 12/14.  Friday, 12/16 we will have our writing strategies and techniques test. 

 

 

 

December 8, 2011

Carlton: Today we finished reading "The Ransom of Red Chief" and discussed the literary technique of irony.  We also took the spelling test for the DMS spelling bee.

Tomorrow, students will be given a packet which will detail the writing review project.  This project will be due next Friday, 12/16.  The purpose of the project is to help students review the two genres of writing we have worked on, and to practice their skills in these genres.  I have attached a copy of the directions and examples below.

Attard/Carlton: We are working on the persuasive writing outline.  This is due tomorrow. The SAT 5 quiz is Friday, 12/9

Johnson/Carlton:  We are preparing for the writing test by reviewing many of the strategies and techniques the students have learned.  Next week, students will have a comprehensive test on writing strategies.  They completed a study guide today which will assist them in preparing for the test.  The test will be Friday, 12/16

Carlton: Today all 8th grade students the language arts checkpoint test in class.  This test will be used as an assessment tool to help us determine how our students are progressing in our curriculum.  Tomorrow, students will take the mock writing test to help them prepare for the GA State Writing Assessment on January 18.  Students will take the test in the actual testing situation that they will have on the 18th.  Students will have 100 minutes to write on an assigned expository or persuasive topic.  Please have students bring pencils and black or blue ink pens.
