Current Happenings

We are half-way through the quarter already!  This year has really flown by!  Well, 7th grade is moving along very well in the art class room.  We have completed 2 projects and are in the process of completing a third.  We would like to thank artist, Pamela Daresta for coming to the Dickerson art class to give us all a lesson in Printmaking.  We all enjoyed learning about this art medium.  We have been working on our own printmaking projects.  These should be finished by the end of this week.  One thing we learned is that this can be a time-consuming endeavor with 25 students in both classes.

We will be starting a new project this week.  We will be making our own Treasure Map.  This is a long project.  We will probably have to interrupt it to begin our Ceramics project.

Mark your calendars for May 13th!  This is the date of Dickerson's annual "Night of the Arts!"  The art show will be held from 6:00-8:00P.M.  All are invited, even if a student does not have an art work in the show.  In a week or so, you will be receiving a personalized invitation for the event.  Any student who had art this year and completed the event-specific project will have a framed work of art in the show.  On the night of the event, Orchestra, Band, Chorus and Facs will be performing and/or selling baked goods.  We all look forward to seeing you there!

Self-portrait

Well, we have completed our self-portraits and they look great!  You have worked hard on these and the end result really reflects that.  Please remember that you will not be getting these back until May of this year.  I will be hanging these in my art show at the end of the school year.  Keep May 13th open so that you can attend the show!

We have started our ceramics project and I think everyone is excited to get going!  We will be making gourds with birds in them.  I am looking forward to seeing how all of them come out.

Keep in mind that we will be doing a reading assignment after we finish our ceramics project.  We will discuss this further as time approaches.

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break.  It is nice to be back with all of you.  We will be glazing our ceramic gourds this week.  I hope to have them all fired by Wednesday.  After firing, I will be putting the gourds on display in the case in the E-wing hall.  They already look beautiful, I can't wait to see the finished product.

Please be reminded if you are in my second hour art class, we will be taking the AR test on Thursday of this week, the 29th of November.  Please finish up your reading for November so that you will be ready on Thursday.

Animal Spirits

All of your hard work is showing in your beautiful Animal Spirit designs!  They are due on Friday, November 9th at the end of class, so use your class time wisely!  Look for these beautiful animals to be on display in the main hallway of the school in the next few weeks.

7th grade will begin a ceramics project on Tuesday, November 13th.  The project will be ceramic face containers.  This project will leave much room for creativity and imagination.

Reminder! If you are in my second period class, please start reading your AR book!  I have been allowing students to go to the media center to choose a book, so you should all have one by the end of this week.  We will be discussing taking the AR test in the next few weeks.

Reminder!  Hearing and Vision screening process will take place on November 12, during Connections time.  If you wear glasses or contacts, please make sure you have them with you for the vision screening.  Anyone who is absent will be screened on November 13th.  Bring your AR book to read on the 12th as you will have to wait silently for other students to complete the process before you can be dismissed back to class.  You should have a book to read whether you are in my first period class or my second period class.

Animal Spirits

Welcome to the second quarter 7th grade classes!  We have been working very hard on the "Optical Illusion" project.  Toward the end of the week, we will begin a new project and keep the Optical Illusion as our anchor project or long term project.  This will not be due until the end of the quarter.  Each time you finish a project, you may work on the Optical Illusion as it will remain in your tray until it is due.

The next project we will be starting is called the "Animal Spirit" project.  We will be going to the media center to do some research on animals.  We will look for the flora and  fauna of the region the animal is from.  This information will be used inside the animal to learn about the animal and its environment while we create an aesthetically pleasing design.  Water color pencils will be the medium of choice for this project.

Please be reminded that November is Connections month to take the Accelerated Reader test.  All of the Connections second hour classes will read an AR book and take the test by the end of the month of November.  If you have not yet chosen a book for November, please stop by the media center and choose an AR book.  Mrs. Inman will be expecting you and will help you choose something interesting to read.  All students will take the AR test by the end of the month, so please start preparing by reading a book you currently have or choosing one from the media center.  If you are not sure whether the book you choose is on the AR list, you can check this easily.  Simply go to the Dickerson web page and choose media center.  Once you have chosen media center, click on Accelerated reader.  You may look up book titles or research by author on this page.  You can also just stop by the media center and ask Ms. Inman to show you the list.

Thank you to all of my 7th grade classes for writing such thoughtful and kind letters to the military.  These are truly a gift and I am proud of each and every one of you for taking the time to participat.

Musical Instrument Illustrations

We have been practicing our drawing skills in art class.  Mr. Seiver's and Mr. Palmer have been gracious enough to lend some musical instruments to the seventh grade art class.  We have spent the past week drawing the intricate forms.  It has been a challenge to make the instruments look like metal.  You are all doing a great job honing your skills.  By the end of the week, we will be glazing our clay projects.  Please don't forget to be prepared to take an Accelerated Reader test on the 28th of September.  If you are ready to take the test before this date, let me know and I will arrange for you to do so.

7th Grade

J0406878 Don't forget to research the flora and fauna of the animal you chose to draw for this Animal Spirit project.  If you skip this step, you will find that you have nothing to "fill" your animal up with.  Please keep in mind that this is not just a lesson in skill building and media exploration.  Much of the object of this lesson is to "teach" the viewer about the animal in a very visual way.  This project will be due on the 27th of August.  I look forward to seeing the final results!
