Welcome to Dickerson Ms. Dempsey!

A special welcome to Ms. Dempsey our student Art Education teacher from Kennesaw State University!  Ms. Dempsey will be teaching art with Mrs. Bronzino from August until December.  We look forward to a great 6 months together!

Please remember that November is Connections month to test for Accelerated reader.  If you have not yet chosen a book to read for November, please stop by the media center and speak to Ms. Inman.  She will help you choose something that will be interesting to you as well as satisfy the AR requirement.  If you are reading a book that you are not sure is an AR book, you may look it up on the Dickerson web site.  Simply go to the site and click on media center.  Once there, click on Accelerated Reader.  You will be able to look your book up by title or author.  Since November is fast approaching, please begin planning for this assignment.  If you are currently reading an AR book and finish reading it soon, let me know.  I will let you take the AR test before the end of the month.  All second hour Connections students will be AR tested by the end of November, so start reading soon!  If you have any questions, come talk to me and I will try to make things clear.

Show your "Spirit of the Season" with the 6th grade art classes!

Welcome to art, all 6th grade students!  We are kicking off the 2nd. quarter by entering students in the 5th annual "The Spirit of the Season"  art contest presented by the Galleria Specialty Shops and the Marietta Daily Journal.  Students are asked to create the perfect illustration that showcases the holiday spirit.  All entries will be on display on the center court of the Galleria Specialty Shops.  A special awards ceremony and reception for all entrants and the community will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12.  Students should be finished with this project by Friday, October 26, allowing  enough time to send the entries in.

The elements of art will be explored next in 6th grade art.  Ms. Dempsey, our student teacher from Kennesaw State University will be directing the students to read about the elements.  A project reflecting these design concepts will be explored as well.   Each element of art will be illustrated on it's own for deeper understanding.

November is Connections month to have students in all second hour classes read an Accelerated Reader book.  All students will take an AR test by the end of November.  If a student is not sure if his/her book is an AR book, this can be checked out simply.  Go to the Dickerson web site and click on media center.  Once there, click on Accelerated Reader and then you can check the book according to author or title.  Please start preparing by choosing an AR book to read or finish reading a book you have already started.  If you finish the book before the end of the month, let Ms. Dempsey or Mrs. Bronzino know so that you can take the AR test while the details are still fresh in your mind.

Aboriginal dot painting

Welcome second quarter 8th grade classes!  You have all been working very hard on the "Gravity failed" project and they are looking very nice.  Toward the end of the week, we will begin a new project.  The Gravity project will be our anchor project or long term project.  This will not be due until the end of the quarter and will be worked on when we finish other assignments.

Aboriginal dot painting begins with a video of the aboriginal people and the method of painting used by these people in the outback of Australia.  We will choose a subject to draw and then paint using a special tool to make tiny dots on black paper. All of the paint colors must be custom blended to develop rich, vibrant colors.  This is a lenthy project because it is so detail oriented.  Two and a half weeks are usually dedicated to the completion of this project.

Thank you to my 8th grade classes for writing such lovely letters to the military personnel.  You wrote thoughtful and kind letters and I know the men and women who receive them will see them as a gift , just as I do.

Animal Spirits

Welcome to the second quarter 7th grade classes!  We have been working very hard on the "Optical Illusion" project.  Toward the end of the week, we will begin a new project and keep the Optical Illusion as our anchor project or long term project.  This will not be due until the end of the quarter.  Each time you finish a project, you may work on the Optical Illusion as it will remain in your tray until it is due.

The next project we will be starting is called the "Animal Spirit" project.  We will be going to the media center to do some research on animals.  We will look for the flora and  fauna of the region the animal is from.  This information will be used inside the animal to learn about the animal and its environment while we create an aesthetically pleasing design.  Water color pencils will be the medium of choice for this project.

Please be reminded that November is Connections month to take the Accelerated Reader test.  All of the Connections second hour classes will read an AR book and take the test by the end of the month of November.  If you have not yet chosen a book for November, please stop by the media center and choose an AR book.  Mrs. Inman will be expecting you and will help you choose something interesting to read.  All students will take the AR test by the end of the month, so please start preparing by reading a book you currently have or choosing one from the media center.  If you are not sure whether the book you choose is on the AR list, you can check this easily.  Simply go to the Dickerson web page and choose media center.  Once you have chosen media center, click on Accelerated reader.  You may look up book titles or research by author on this page.  You can also just stop by the media center and ask Ms. Inman to show you the list.

Thank you to all of my 7th grade classes for writing such thoughtful and kind letters to the military.  These are truly a gift and I am proud of each and every one of you for taking the time to participat.

Ms. Bronzino
