We took our Style Builders – 8 Ways to Begin a Sentence Quiz Today!

Reminder:  It is conference week next week!  We will be following the early release schedule.

“THE BIG THANK YOU”

 Now is your chance to say Thank You to our troops!  A local radio show, “The Bert Show” is collecting letters of thanks so every single soldier stationed or deployed outside the United States can receive a letter of gratitude on Thanksgiving Day.  This is to give our troops a “Big Thank You” with a little taste of home this Thanksgiving. 

John Barge, State School Superintendent, endorsed the program and encouraged all schools in the state of Georgia to encourage their students, faculty and staff to write letters to our troops expressing our appreciation for their service.

Deadline:  Due to Miss Attard by Wednesday, October 26 (this is to give us time to have them at the radio station by Friday, October 28)

Here are the specs that you need to know when writing your letter:

LETTER FORMAT

Each letter should be heartfelt, handwritten, original, and free of any political statements.  The purpose of the letter is to express thanks to the military personnel currently deployed outside the United States. The Radio Station (Q100) reserves the right to eliminate those messages that are political in nature and do not reflect a positive message in the spirit of Thanksgiving.  Those letters will be destroyed.

All letters must be on 8.5” x 11” paper or smaller.  Do not use glue, tape, staples, cardboard, glitter or otherwise attach anything to the paper.  Decorate using crayons, pencil, pens, etc.  Use both sides if you like, but use one page per letter only.  Do not send cards or photographs.  Individual letters should not be sealed in envelopes. Do not send anything except letters.  Donations of any kind cannot be accepted, and they should not be included or attached to letters.

It’s Beach Time!

We began our beach themed 11 sentence paragraph.  We discussed our 8^th Grade Style Builders that the students will use within their writing. QUACK!  SAT Volume 3!  Your notecards will be due next Tuesday, October 18^th.  This is our third unit which means that you will have a test over Volumes 1, 2, & 3.  You test will be Tuesday, October 25^th.

“Diversity means…” is the theme this year

1) Six categories : visual arts, literature, musical composition, photography, film production and dance choreography.

2) Specific info about rules and suggestions for each of 6 categories most easily found at http://www.ptareflections.org/cs/rules_and_documents

This website also has a video for each category and how best to present – very specific entry, labeling and packaging requirements.

3) Judging based on interpretation of theme, artistic merit and mastery of medium. For example, this means that spelling and grammar count!

4) Original works only. Students may submit multiple entries.

5) No multidimensional pieces, frames, sculpture or ceramics will be accepted.

6) No copyrighted materials, such as cartoons or pictures from magazines.

7) All entries must be titled by the student.

8) All entries must have artist statement – everyone who enters is considered an artist, not just the painters! This can be one sentence or an additional sheet of paper, but is highly weighted in judging the student’s interpretation of the theme.

9) All entries must be signed by student and parent/guardian – no exceptions.

10)Separate consent form required if actual faces or voices are recorded.

11)No separate “special artist” forms this year – last year, our “special artist” entries were very competitive with those not labeled as such.

12)Please ask your students to write all information clearly and legibly. There are writeable forms on line this year - we must be able to read their names and phone numbers in order to contact them when they win!
